About Peapack-Gladstone's Tree Canopy

Incorporated as a Borough on April 23, 1912, Peapack-Gladstone spans just 5.80 sq mi at 243 feet elevation in northwestern Somerset County — making it one of the smaller boroughs in the County, but home to some of the most mature canopy in the region. About 2,500 residents live across the twin villages of Peapack (zip 07977) and Gladstone (07934), connected by U.S. Route 206 and County Route 512.

What defines Peapack-Gladstone’s tree work is the equestrian-country estate heritage:

  • Natirar — a 404-acre estate (247 acres within Peapack-Gladstone) once owned by Hassan II of Morocco, now a Somerset County Park administered by the County Park Commission.
  • Essex Hunt Club & Fox Hounds, Hamilton Farm Golf Club, and the United States Equestrian Team headquarters — three institutions whose grounds carry centuries-old specimen oaks, beeches, and tulip poplars.
  • Gill St. Bernard’s School sits on 208 acres straddling Peapack-Gladstone and Chester Township.
  • The Moses Craig Lime Kilns — listed on the National Register of Historic Places, operated until the mid-1930s.
  • The Borough sits along the Peapack Brook corridor, which joins the Raritan River near the eastern Borough border.

Peapack-Gladstone’s tree-protection rules — Chapter 19 of the Borough Code, recently amended May 2025 — are among the stricter in Somerset County. Any tree 4 inches DBH or larger requires a Tree Removal Permit from the Zoning Officer, with a $25 fee per tree and a tiered replacement table (1 tree for 4"-18" DBH, scaling up to 4 trees for 39"+ DBH). Residential exemptions allow 3 trees per year on lots under 3 acres (5 trees on larger lots) for trees 4-18" DBH; no tree over 18" DBH may be removed without a permit. Hazard trees are exempt from fees and replacement.

Common Peapack-Gladstone Tree Species & Hazards

Peapack-Gladstone’s 5.80 sq mi pack some of Somerset County’s most mature estate canopy — centuries-old specimen trees on hunt-club grounds, hilltop estates above Pottersville Road, and along the Peapack Brook. Here’s what we see most often on local properties:

White Oak — Quercus alba

Dominant on hilltop estate properties above Pottersville Road and across the larger Natirar-adjacent parcels. Vulnerable to root-zone compaction during construction and to oak wilt (Bretziella fagacearum) in summer. Watch for upper-crown thinning and bark seeps.

Red Oak — Quercus rubra

Common throughout the historic Main Street area and along the Hamilton Farm Golf Club perimeter properties. Susceptible to oak wilt and to bacterial leaf scorch (Xylella fastidiosa), both present in central New Jersey.

Tulip Poplar — Liriodendron tulipifera

Fast-growing canopy giants on Borough estate properties. Soft wood drops large branches in summer storms; co-dominant stems with included bark drive a high share of our Peapack-Gladstone emergency calls.

White Ash — Fraxinus americana

Emerald Ash Borer has hit ash trees across central New Jersey hard. Thin-crowned ash with epicormic shoots and D-shaped exit holes is past the treatment window — removal is the safer call.

American Beech — Fagus grandifolia

Mature specimens on older estate properties and across the Gill St. Bernard’s School grounds. Watch for beech bark disease and beech leaf disease, both spreading across New Jersey. Smooth bark splits, canopy thinning, and dark-banded leaves are early signs.

Sycamore — Platanus occidentalis

Streamside specimens along the Peapack Brook corridor and the Raritan River near the eastern Borough border. Anthracnose causes annual early leaf-drop — heavy defoliation weakens older specimens.

Areas We Serve Within Peapack-Gladstone, NJ

Peapack-Gladstone

Peapack-Gladstone sits along the Peapack Brook corridor where rich soil supports tall hardwood trees. Fast growth can weaken roots over time, so older oaks and maples often need trimming and canopy thinning to reduce storm risk.

Peapack

Peapack has many estate properties and historic homes with large shade trees planted generations ago. The soil often shifts from fertile topsoil to dense clay, which can limit deep root growth. Older hardwoods in the area often need crown balancing and deadwood removal to reduce storm risk while preserving their natural character.
