Emergency tree service is same-day or overnight response to a tree that has fallen (or is about to fall) on a house, vehicle, driveway, or power line. It also covers trees leaning dangerously after a storm and hazardous limbs over occupied areas. Unlike routine pruning, emergency work happens in high-risk conditions — often at night, near live wires, and with compromised structures.

Four things, in order:

1. Get people out. Move everyone to the opposite side of the house or a neighbor’s yard.
2. Assume all wires are live. Stay 30+ feet away. Call 911 if utilities are involved or anyone is hurt.
3. Contact your power/gas company. PSE&G, JCP&L, or your local co-op — get and save the report number.
4. Document everything. Photos from multiple angles before anything is moved, then call your homeowner’s insurance within 24–48 hours.

Then call a licensed tree crew for removal.

Basic NJ rule: whoever’s property the tree falls onto is responsible — even if the tree grew from a neighbor’s yard. Your own homeowner’s insurance is the first line of coverage.

Exception (negligence): if the neighbor’s tree was visibly dying or previously reported hazardous, your insurer may pursue theirs. Requires documentation (photos, prior emails, professional reports).

Act of God: storms, hurricanes, and nor’easters usually take negligence off the table. Each owner covers their own damage.

Usually yes if the tree hit a covered structure (house, garage, shed, fence) or blocks a driveway. Standard HO-3 policies pay for removal from the structure.

Common limits: $500–$1,000 per tree removal cap. Trees that fall only in the yard (no damage) are typically not covered.

Most our four-county area municipalities offer curbside storm debris pickup after named storms, but rules vary:

• Common curbside rules: branches cut to 4-foot lengths, tied in bundles, placed at the curb (not in the road).
• Log limits: most towns exclude logs over 6″ diameter — you’re responsible for those.
• Special pickups are usually declared only after major events; regular yard-waste days may reject heavy storm loads.
• Check your town’s DPW page before piling debris — Somerville, Bridgewater, Hillsborough, and Flemington each publish their own rules.
