- About Us
Licensed Tree Service Watchung, NJ
Watchung’s Chapter 24 (“Tree Removal and Replacement”) requires a permit for removing any tree 8 inches DBH or larger on residential property.
Removed trees must be replaced on a size-based ratio. The borough’s steep slope ordinance (Chapter 23A) restricts disturbance on grades of 15% or greater — a significant factor on the Watchung Mountains’ basalt terrain.
Wayne’s Tree Service holds NJTC License #806860 and LTCO #565. Our licensed tree experts prepare permit documentation and work with the Watchung Shade Tree Commission to ensure compliant removals on the borough’s densely wooded, steep-terrain properties.

Our Residential and Commercial Tree Services in Watchung, NJ
Watchung’s hilltop location on Jurassic-era basalt ridges makes it consistently one of the hardest-hit communities for wind-related tree damage in Central New Jersey. Superstorm Sandy (2012) caused devastating canopy loss — power outages lasted two weeks in some areas as hundreds of trees fell on homes, roads, and utility lines.
Rocky, well-drained ridge soils support dense stands of chestnut oak and hickory, while ravines shelter hemlock groves stressed by woolly adelgid. Our services include hazard tree removal on steep slopes, crown reduction on wind-exposed oaks, emergency storm response, and dead-ash removal from the ongoing Emerald Ash Borer infestation.

We use professional-grade equipment and industry-best practices to minimize disruption and maximize safety. If your tree is interfering with power lines, too close to your home, or simply has to go, Wayne’s Tree Service has the crew and experience to handle it.

About Watchung Borough's Tree Canopy
Incorporated as a Borough on May 23, 1926, Watchung sits in northern Somerset County across 6.04 sq mi atop the First and Second Watchung Mountain ridges — Jurassic-era basalt formations that give the Borough its name and define almost every tree-care job we work here.
About 6,449 residents (2020 census) live in the Borough — much of the Watchung canopy sits on steep slopes where Watchung’s Chapter 23A steep slope ordinance restricts ground disturbance on grades over 15%.
Notable Watchung geographic features:
- Stony Brook flows through Watchung from neighboring Warren Township, ending at Watchung Lake with its cascading dam.
- Wetumpka Falls sits along Stony Brook.
- Washingtonville is the unincorporated historic locality within the Borough.
- Watchung Valley Golf Club has occupied its current grounds since 1927.
Watchung’s high-elevation location and dense canopy make it consistently one of the hardest-hit communities for wind-related tree damage in Central New Jersey — Superstorm Sandy (2012) caused devastating canopy loss with power outages lasting two weeks in some sections. Many residential lots carry 50 to 100+ mature trees that need rotational maintenance.
Watchung’s tree-protection rules (Borough Chapter 24) require a permit for removing any tree 8 inches DBH or greater on residential property, with size-based replacement requirements. Hazard trees are typically handled through the Borough Engineer, and removing six or more trees may also require Environmental Commission approval.
Common Watchung Tree Species & Hazards
Watchung’s 6.04 sq mi sit on Jurassic-era basalt ridges with some of the densest residential canopy in Somerset County. Here’s what we see most often on local properties:
White Oak — Quercus alba
Dominant across the First Watchung Mountain ridge — including properties along Bonnie Burn Road and the wooded estates near Sunlit Drive. Vulnerable to root-zone compaction during construction and to oak wilt (Bretziella fagacearum) in summer.
Red Oak — Quercus rubra
Common throughout Hill area properties along Second Watchung Mountain and the Johnston Drive corridor. Susceptible to oak wilt and to bacterial leaf scorch (Xylella fastidiosa), both present in central New Jersey.
Tulip Poplar — Liriodendron tulipifera
Fast-growing canopy giants on Watchung’s steep basalt slopes. Soft wood drops large branches in summer storms; co-dominant stems with included bark drive a high share of our Watchung emergency calls, particularly along Mountain Boulevard and Lakeview Avenue.
White Ash — Fraxinus americana
Emerald Ash Borer has hit ash trees across central New Jersey hard. Thin-crowned ash with epicormic shoots and D-shaped exit holes is past the treatment window — removal is the safer call.
Silver Maple — Acer saccharinum
Mid-century plantings throughout post-war Watchung subdivisions. Brittle wood, V-shaped crotches, and surface roots that lift driveways — typical candidates for crown reduction or staged removal.
Sweetgum & Norway Maple
Common street-tree plantings throughout Watchung. Sweetgum drops dense, sharp gumballs and Norway maple grows aggressive surface roots that conflict with sidewalks, driveways, and patios.
