About Fanwood Borough's Tree Canopy
Incorporated October 2, 1895, Fanwood is a small Union County Borough of just 1.34 sq mi — named after Fannie Wood, a 19th-century author. About 7,774 residents (2020 census) live in this single-zip community (07023) at 157 ft elevation, bordered by Plainfield to the southwest and surrounded on all other sides by Scotch Plains.
What defines Fanwood’s tree work is the protected canopy of the Fanwood Park Historic District — 52 acres added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2004, with 57 contributing buildings including the historic Fanwood Station and the Georgian Revival Urner/Gibbs House (1894). Mature specimen trees on these district properties date back generations.
Robinsons Branch — a tributary of the Rahway River — flows through the Borough toward Robinson’s Branch Reservoir, creating riparian-buffer considerations for streamside properties.
Fanwood shares the Scotch Plains-Fanwood Regional School District with neighboring Scotch Plains. The Borough sits on NJ Transit’s Raritan Valley Line at Fanwood Station — and our crews work property tree care from the Sleepy Hollow neighborhood and Fanwood Nature Center to the historic homes along South Avenue and Forest Road.
Common Fanwood Tree Species & Hazards
Fanwood’s 1.34 sq mi pack mature historic-district canopy alongside post-war Union County residential plantings — plus streamside species along Robinsons Branch. Here’s what we see most often:
White Oak — Quercus alba
Mature specimens across the Fanwood Park Historic District properties and along North Avenue. Vulnerable to root-zone compaction from nearby construction and to oak wilt (Bretziella fagacearum) in summer.
Pin Oak — Quercus palustris
Common throughout Fanwood’s post-war residential neighborhoods including the Sleepy Hollow area and homes along Terrill Road. Pin oak struggles with iron chlorosis on Union County’s alkaline urban-fill soils — watch for yellow-green younger leaves.
Norway Maple — Acer platanoides
Dominant street tree throughout Fanwood, particularly along La Grande Avenue and Forest Road. Aggressive surface roots that lift sidewalks and shallow root plates that uproot in saturated soils.
White Ash — Fraxinus americana
Emerald Ash Borer has hit ash trees across Union County hard. Thin-crowned ash with epicormic shoots and D-shaped exit holes is past the treatment window — removal is the safer call.
Silver Maple — Acer saccharinum
Mid-century plantings throughout the Borough — particularly along the Robinsons Branch corridor. Brittle wood, V-shaped crotches, and surface roots that lift driveways.
Sycamore — Platanus occidentalis
Streamside specimens along the Robinsons Branch through Fanwood. Anthracnose causes annual early leaf-drop — heavy defoliation weakens older specimens.

What Our Customers Say About Our Tree Services
Wayne’s Tree Service for professional, safe, and affordable tree care. With over 30 years of experience and a 4.9 ★ rating on Google, here’s what our clients have to say about working with us:
Very happy with Wayne’s tree service. The estimate was quick and easy, and the work was performed in a timely manner. I wasn’t home during the service, and came back to a pleasant surprise of no mess! After pruning of a 20+ foot tree, and removal/stump grinding of another medium sized tree the job was done exactly as discussed. Thank you!
