Wayne’s Tree Service handles crane-assisted removal of tall hardwoods on tight estate lots, sectional dismantling near homes and power lines, canopy reduction for storm preparedness, stump grinding below grade, and preventive pruning — backed by 24/7 emergency response when nor’easters and ice storms hit the township’s exposed ridgelines.

Tree Removal Service

Tree Removal

Tree removal takes down dead, hazardous, or unwanted trees safely, including large oaks and maples near homes, driveways, and power lines.

Wayne's Tree Service uses cranes and sectional dismantling on Tewksbury's tall hardwoods where a tree cannot be felled in one piece. Common reasons for removal in the township include storm damage, root or trunk decay, and trees leaning toward structures after high winds off the ridgelines.

Tree Trimming & Pruning

Pruning removes dead, diseased, or crossing limbs to improve a tree's structure and reduce storm risk. ISA Certified Arborists prune to ANSI A300 standards, never topping or over-thinning. Late winter, roughly December through March, is the best window to prune most deciduous trees in New Jersey because the trees are dormant and disease pressure is lowest.

Stump grinding and removal

Stump Grinding & Removal

Stump grinding removes a leftover stump by cutting it 4 to 6 inches below grade so the area can be seeded, replanted, or paved. Grinding avoids the deep excavation that whole-stump removal requires and leaves a clean, level surface. Wayne's Tree Service grinds stumps of any diameter, including the wide bases left by mature Tewksbury oaks.

Tree & Shrub Planting service

Tree & Shrub Planting

Tree and shrub planting replaces removed trees and restores screening, shade, and property value. Tewksbury's tree ordinance requires replacement at a 1:1 ratio when a non-exempt tree is removed without a permit, so species selection matters. Wayne's Tree Service plants species suited to zone 6b soils, including native oaks, maples, and dogwoods.

Expert Shrub Planting
Land Clearing service

Land Clearing

Land clearing removes trees, brush, and undergrowth to prepare a site for building, fencing, pasture, or a new driveway. Land disturbance greater than 5,000 square feet in Tewksbury requires certification from the Hunterdon County Soil Conservation District, and parcels in the Highlands Preservation Area may require NJ DEP approval. Wayne's Tree Service clears the trees and coordinates around these requirements.

Tree Removal Permits & Local Rules in Tewksbury

Tewksbury regulates tree removal under Chapter 16.20 of the Township Code (Tree Clearing and Removal), adopted in Ordinance 08-2014. The ordinance defines a regulated “tree” as any deciduous tree with a trunk diameter greater than 4 inches measured 4½ feet above the ground, or any coniferous tree with a trunk greater than 4 inches in diameter or taller than 6 feet.

Do you need a permit to remove a tree in Tewksbury?

A permit is required to remove a regulated tree unless the tree or property is exempt. The most common exemptions are:

  • A residential lot of 1½ acres or less with a dwelling on it — except in the Local Historic Districts of Oldwick, Mountainville, and Pottersville, where the exemption does not apply
  • Any dead, diseased, or hazardous tree likely to endanger life or property
  • Trees within 20 feet of a proposed home, well, septic system, or accessory structure
  • Trees within 10 feet of a planned residential driveway
  • Trees removed for utility installation, or on a working farm or nursery

Permit fee and timeline

  • $25 for an application covering 5 acres or less, plus $5 for each additional acre (no maximum)
  • The Township Zoning Officer acts on a complete application within 10 business days
  • Removing a non-exempt tree without a permit requires replacing it at a 1:1 ratio and can carry a fine of up to $2,000 per tree

Tree Pests & Diseases

Two invasive pests pose the biggest threat to Tewksbury’s trees: the spotted lanternfly and the emerald ash borer.

Spotted Lanternfly

The spotted lanternfly was confirmed in Hunterdon County in August 2018, and the county is part of New Jersey’s quarantine zone. The insect feeds on more than 70 plant species, with heavy feeding confirmed on red maple, silver maple, black walnut, and tulip poplar. Its preferred host is the invasive Tree of Heaven (Ailanthus altissima). Removing Tree of Heaven from a property reduces lanternfly pressure on nearby hardwoods.

Emerald Ash Borer

The emerald ash borer was first detected in New Jersey in 2014 and has since been confirmed in 17 counties. Larvae burrow under the bark of ash trees and cut off the flow of water and nutrients, killing the tree. Individual high-value ash trees can be protected with systemic pesticide treatment applied by a licensed applicator; declining or dead ash trees should be removed before they become brittle and hazardous.

Note: Oak wilt has not yet been confirmed in New Jersey, though it is present in nearby mid-Atlantic states. Pruning oaks during winter dormancy is a recommended precaution.
